Idea for the app
The idea came during a ski-vacation with a big group of friends. Subgroups are formed all the time. One time you are having lunch with a one group, another time you have drinks with another group. Going Dutch (where the bill is split every single time) is a lot of hassle. It is easier to do this after the holiday is over. This means a little administration during the holiday.
How did we split those bills on paper?
First create a table. A few columns are needed for the bill: description, date, amount, who paid the bill plus columns or all the names within your party.
In each row you list the bill (description, date, amount), who paid (a name) + you set checkmarks for anyone who took part in spending the money.
At the end of the holiday you calculate how much each one has spent + how much each one has paid. The difference will be either positive (you paid too much and thus will receive money from your friends) or negative (you spent more than you paid and still have to pay something to your friends).

Purpose of the app
The purpose of the app is to do the administration mentioned above. There are 3 main screens:
- Friends: overview of friends, how much they paid and how much they used
- Friend detail: enter/change friend names
- Bills: overview of all bills, who paid them and who participated in consuming
- Bill detail: enter/change bills
- Note: the app will suggest who pays what amount to whom.
We encourage you to follow the suggestion since “the algorithm is always right“.
This app can of course also be used for day trips, festivals, among roommates, etcetera.
Suggestions for next versions of the app
All suggestions are welcome. Please send them to SplitTheBills@sequascha.com. Or, just enter them here on this site.

Add bill divider
Add more than one currency
Hi Mariela,
Thanks for your feedback. What do you expect from a bill divider? On the bill detail screen you can see who paid and how much each share is. Or would you like to divide a bill into unequal amounts?
For currencies, you mean to use the app for trips over several countries using several currencies?
Hi,
Would be great if I could save the history. In other words, for instance, two separate trips/events. Unless it is possible already and I simply could not find it.
Many thanks
Hi Ariela,
You are right, there is no possibility to save a trip and start a new one. It’s on the list for the next version since others have requested this feature as well.
Thanks for your feedback
Corne
Awesome app – we now “spreadsheet” our trips with ease! It would be nice at the end of the day to see total spent be each instead of just who owes what. Although of course not knowing how much we spent at th end of a trip is kind of nice too 🙂
On a recent trip to South America (3 couples) we needed to pay some bills in advance in GBP, EUR & USD and while travelling in USD, CLP & ARG. Settling up was in EUR at a fixed rate for each of the other currencies. Each couple needed a final printable schedule showing all the expenses, who paid each expense in which currency (sometimes paid by more than one person and sometimes even in a different currency per person) with a total for each couple for their share of expenses and their payments, and how much was due by or owed to each.
Can you build that into your app please? And save each trip/event under its own heading for future reference? That would be worth paying for.
Hi Chris,
These are all great features for a new version. I am currently working on a version in which you can edit all at the same time. After release I will definitely add your suggestions to a next version. Thanks again!
Corne
Hi Corne,
I look forward to your finished product. Please let me know once your new app is available.
Good luck,
Chris
Partial consumption, that is when the spilt is not always 50/50 is not possible to capture, anything on this?
Hi Karthik,
True, in this version bills are always split equally. I’ll put it on the list for next version. Thanks for your comment.
Corne
Hi Corne,
It was not possible to split our skiing trip costs (food & drinks in the chalet) in the app because we stayed for a week but some people stayed for 3-4 days only. Perhaphs it would be possible adding the option to split costs based on the daily average spend.
Regards,
Brigita
Love this app! Is there any control over what appears in the notes and how to see the running totals on who owes what to whom? Thanks!
